Since our show at Argo Tea last week, we have been busy working out the details of our upcoming benefit concert at Southpaw in January.

Basically, Sing for Hope “Street Pianos” will be a reprisal of the massively successful “Street Pianos“ 2010. Last time, there were 60 pianos distributed around the city. This year, they are working on getting 88 pianos spread across all five boroughs. It’s going to be great!

This concert will benefit Sing for Hope “Street Pianos” and give people a chance to show their love for the pianos. We’ve been planning this for a while now, and we have some awesome artists playing, including Miss Anni Rossi, and the wonderful Emily Wells. Buy tickets online here, or at the door ($10).

Back in October, a haphazard tweet led us to the possibility of performing at Argo Tea, an increasingly popular chain of tea cafés based in Chicago. Argo sells specialty tea drinks (bubble tea, hot chocolate tea, tea smoothies) and has NYC locations in Union Square, Columbus Circle, and the Flatiron Building.

On Dec 18, we will do a set in the Union Square location, right in the storefront window for all to see! This is a huge opportunity, and we’re trying to get as many people as possible to stop by. The space is well-designed, the tea is delicious, and the performance is free. Plus, if enough people show their support, there’s a good chance we can schedule additional performances at Argo’s other locations. So please mark your calendar!

Pics from another afternoon spent dutifully in the studio, watching David tweak and twiddle. Can’t wait to share some finished work with everyone in the coming months…this whole thing has been such a journey!

When we listen, it makes us think of ocean waves, and trains, and moons rising over brownstones, and mailing addresses, and email addresses, and hearts, and closeness, and distance, and breakfast, and silence. Does that help at all?

Brunch at the Linger Cafe & Lounge

Yesterday, we performed a brunchtime set at the Linger Cafe & Lounge in Brooklyn. After a mad dash to find a PA and microphone at a local Guitar Center (yes, we are the musicians who show up to a gig without a microphone or speakers), we had the Greene Girl mini sound system up and running.

Our set included “Famous Blue Raincoat,” “Scout,” and a new version of “Witness.” Watching people and cars pass by outside on Atlantic Avenue was oddly soothing, like we were these mechanical storefront mannequins offering an eternal musical interlude for anyone that happened to wander by.

So many exciting things these past few weeks—enough to get me back on Tumblr for the first time in a while, at least.

After I helped out a wonderful, but struggling, East Village cafe and jazz performance space by giving them some press to raise awareness, the co-founders kindly let us perform there last Thursday. We had a warm, magical evening there, goofing around on the piano, and then cuddled up on the couch, listening to co-founder Trudy Silver play, and taking pictures of each other on Becca’s droid. It was a humble, but beautiful night.

The next day, I went to Caravan of Dreams, a strange-but-charming vegan eatery in the East Village, to discuss the possibility of performing there during meal times (solo piano). The manager had me play for an hour to hear what I sound like. People talked, people ate, waiters rushed by, Lauren sat next to me on the floor (for moral support). It was background music, and that was more than fine by me! Honestly, if someone had to pick the one restaurant in New York where muzak could contribute as much to the experience as any of the food or decor does, it would have to be Caravan of Dreams. Come see me play during brunch, Saturday 10/23 and 10/30, 1–3pm!!!

Finally, we have begun planning an exciting benefit concert that will take place in January, at the Gershwin Hotel, and will feature all piano-themed performances. If any of you remember, last spring, an installation called “Play Me, I’m Yours” distributed 60 pianos in public spaces throughout the city. It was awesome, and got a lot of great press for both the artist (Luke Jerram) as well as the cause (Sing For Hope—a non-profit that introduces arts programming to communities via schools, hospitals, and fundraising events). Now, we are in the process of coordinating the event (scheduling artists, catering, invitations, press releases, promotion), which will feature 5 piano-themed artists and performers (including Greene Girl!), and the opportunity to learn more (and donate…) to this amazing organization. More to come!

Other things in the works, but not wanting to brag—or jinx anything—I’ll stop. The 5-track EP is slowly but surely winding down to a point of completion, and soon we will have a solid, tangible “thing” to put in your eager hands.

Until then, come see us every Wednesday morning (10:30–11:30am) in the lobby at the Gershwin Hotel. 2010 is all about tigers, making mistakes, and dreams coming true. And we still have two months before it’s over!

Starting Wednesday, October 13, Greene Girl will be looking for song requests. And by “song request,” we mean we write the song for you. So don’t go sending us pleas for Leonard Cohen covers, or Billy Joel, or The Supremes, or anything like that.

Here’s how it works. You send us a description—of a person you have a crush on, or a memorable dinner party you recently attended, or a character you encountered on the subway—and we transform your story into a musical episode. And then we perform it for you!

Songs to Order is a new project, aimed to be intelligible and heartfelt. We want to express the things you can’t, or won’t, say. The nagging thoughts that keep you staring off into space while you sit in front of your computer at work. These songs will be mementos, and will vary in style, and, if requested, remain completely anonymous.

Ready to share? Just send us an email. We are currently installed at the Gershwin Hotel, where you can catch us playing in the lobby every Wednesday morning!

So send us your story, and make it clear, and before you know it, you’ll have a custom-made tune resounding in your ear!
